ABOUT ASK AUSTRALIA

Less searching.
A clearer next step.

Government information is spread across agencies, websites and layers of rules. Ask Australia helps you understand where to start, what matters to your situation, and what to do next.

Independent. Not a government website.

Ask Australia is an independently developed service. It is not affiliated with, operated by, or endorsed by the Australian Government or any state or territory government. Official sources inform the answers; government agencies handle applications and make final decisions.

Ask naturally. Get practical guidance.

You should not have to know the department name before you can ask a question. Ask about payments, Medicare, visas, workplace rights, renting or other services. Choose your region, ask a follow-up, and use the source links to continue with the responsible agency.

How an answer is prepared

  1. Understand your question

Your question, region and recent conversation help identify the service and the details you need.

  2. Read relevant official pages

The app searches indexed page addresses and curated starting points, reads relevant pages, follows useful detail links, and retrieves page content.

  3. Explain the answer

DeepSeek uses those excerpts to explain conditions, steps and requirements. Missing details should be identified rather than guessed.

  4. Show the supporting sources

Numbered references link to the official pages. Open “Official sources” below an answer to see its supporting pages.

Transparent about coverage

Our source index lists 112,869 official page addresses. Answers can draw on 120 official websites through indexed page addresses and 141 curated starting pages. The same source collection powers answers and the directory. These include federal services and specialist transport, health, housing, education, workplace, consumer and legal agencies across all eight states and territories. Page addresses are collected from published government sitemaps and searched by their titles and URL paths. Relevant pages are read live before an answer is prepared. If the Passport Office blocks live retrieval, dated, verified excerpts can be used for up to 30 days. Answers and their sources label this fallback and show the check date. Expired excerpts are excluded until rechecked. These excerpts cover adult renewal, fees and processing, rather than every passport scenario. This is not a full-text index or an exhaustive search of every government website.

Pages can be unavailable, rules can change, and AI can misread a source. Check important requirements on the linked agency page before acting. This service does not submit applications, access your government accounts, or provide professional legal, financial or medical advice.

Keep personal details out

Ask general questions without identity numbers, passwords, bank details or identifying documents. Questions and up to three previous turns are sent through this site to DeepSeek, together with relevant official-page excerpts. Basic email, phone and long number patterns are redacted, but this does not remove every personal detail.

Basic first-party analytics use a random browser identifier, stored in a cookie for up to one year, to count visits and recent activity. The analytics database stores anonymous identifiers, timestamps, page-view totals and answer-service counts and timings. It does not store your questions, answers, names, contact details or IP addresses. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control disable browser visit tracking. Clearing cookies creates a new visitor identifier. The private analytics dashboard is restricted to the site owner. The app does not save conversations to a database or browser storage. They remain in your open tab until you refresh or start a new conversation. Hosting and AI providers process requests under their own policies.
